🌿 How I Keep Travel Stress-Free: Planning Just Enough in Advance

5 Things to Prep at Home Before a Spring Getaway

I’ve learned over time that the best trips aren’t the ones planned down to the minute ~ they’re the ones with just enough structure to feel relaxed, and just enough flexibility to let magic happen.

As someone who travels often for creative work, I’ve come to love the gentle art of planning lightly. Not so much that spontaneity disappears, but enough to make space for calm. Whether it’s heading off for a weekend escape or a longer adventure, these small rituals help me stay grounded before the journey even begins.

1. Tidy before you go

Coming home to a calm space makes a world of difference. I always take a few minutes to make the bed, wash the dishes and do a quick house tidy before leaving ~ it’s like gifting your future self a deep breath.

2. Pack with intention

A capsule wardrobe, a good book and one small creative tool ~ a sketchbook, camera or notebook. I’ve learned that overpacking creates decision fatigue, while packing light gives you more energy for the moments that matter.

3. Sketch your itinerary loosely

I like to plan one thing per day ~ a walk, a market or a gallery ~ and leave the rest to chance. Often the unplanned coffee stop or roadside view becomes the day’s highlight.

4. Line up your home support early

If you’ve got pets, plants or post to manage; sort your sitter early. (As a house/pet-sitter myself, I can confirm that December books out fast!) Knowing things at home are in good hands lets you fully relax once you’re away.

5. Bring something to create with

A small creative ritual ~ like jotting notes from the day or painting a quick colour study ~ keeps your senses tuned in. It doesn't need to be perfect (no one else needs to see it!), and you don't need to be an artist to do this. It turns travel from an escape into a conversation with place, and will help you remember your time away more vividly.

🌾 The Joy of Enough

Travel, like creativity, lives in the space between control and 'going with the flow'.
Planning 'just enough' means you get to hold both ~ the quiet comfort of being prepared and the thrill of not knowing exactly what’s next.

If you’re thinking of your next weekend away, I hope this helps you pack a little lighter, breathe a little deeper, and make time for the things that spark your curiosity.
